Liz Bocanegra is a psychology and sociology major from Mexico. She enjoys being involved on campus, from being a Dean's Ambassador to having a role on the executive board of the Association of Commuter Students (ACS).
What is it like to be a Dean’s Ambassador?
It’s great to be able to talk to students and be that liaison between the student body and the Dean’s office. My favorite part about it is being able to speak to prospective students and show them why I love the U.
What accomplishments or activities while at the UM College of Arts & Sciences are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of being accepted to multiple conferences to present my research in the Psychology field that was made possible through the Beyond the Book fellowship from CAS.
What is your favorite A&S memory? University of Miami memory?
My favorite A&S memory is going to the Beyond the Book luncheon at the culmination of my research experience with my mentor, family, and sponsors who made the program possible. My favorite UM memory is being a part of the Great Start program the summer before my freshman year – I met wonderful people who later on became my best friends as well as had a sneak peek as to what college would be like.
Who or what influenced your A&S education the most?
Sean Kilpatrick, my former supervisor at the Undergraduate Academic Services in the Psychology department, is the person that’s influenced me the most. He really helped with my transition into college and taught me valuable skills regarding professionalism and work ethic and I really appreciate that.
What is your main UM extracurricular activity – why is it important to you?
My main extracurricular activity is being on the executive board of the Association of Commuter Students (ACS). This is important to me because ACS is my home away from home. As a commuter student, it’s given me my niche on campus.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is the gliders in front of the sand volleyball courts. I love taking in the beautiful Miami weather there and it’s also a great place to study.
How did any of your beliefs or interests change during your time at A&S?
I believe my interests changed in that they became more well-rounded. I came in as a Psychology major, picked up a Sociology major, an Art minor, and a Chemistry cognate. I was able to really explore my interests and hone in on my talents through the College.
If you were to offer advice to a future ‘Cane, what would you say?
Enjoy every moment! Four years goes by in a blink with all the fun you have here at UM.
