The College & Miami

The College of Arts & Sciences is located in suburban Coral Gables, just minutes from downtown Miami, one of the most diverse, dynamic, and global cities in America. A&S students and scholars live, work, research, and play in Miami, an endless resource for internship and volunteer opportunities, language and cultural immersion, intellectual exploration, and lively entertainment. In turn, the city views the College as its primary brain trust. A&S scholars work closely with government agencies, businesses, and nonprofit organizations across the region to improve the economic output and quality of life of our shared community.

Miami’s University

As the top-ranked university in Florida, the University of Miami is the intellectual hub of the region. The Center for the Humanities at A&S hosts free public lectures and conferences year round featuring some of the world’s most influential authors, artist, activists, and political leaders. The University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas also sponsors events and conferences that attract the top minds in Latin American politics and culture to Miami.  The Lowe Museum is South Florida’s oldest modern art museum, and student and touring productions at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre draw crowds from across the city.

Community Outreach

A&S students and scholars are committed to the economic success, public health, and environmental sustainability of the greater Miami community.  Professor Luis Herns Marcelin, who has dual appointments with anthropology and the medical school, works with the growing Haitian community to improve the lives of both immigrants and their families back home. The Department of Psychology provides low-cost counseling and intervention services for at-risk youth and adults. And the College partners with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to provide “scientists in residence” and free on-campus summer sessions for promising middle- and high-school students from underserved backgrounds.
