Welcome to Women’s and Gender Studies, at the University of Miami. I am the Director of the program. I am an associate professor of Political Science, and my research focuses on the politics and policies of gender and social equity around the world, with a focus on Latin America. To learn more about my research, go to . Women’s and Gender Studies is an inter-disciplinary program, and we offer a major in WGS, and a minor in both WGS and LGBTQ Studies. We also offer a variety of cognates, including Introduction to WGS/Introduction to LGBTQ Studies. Aside from our core courses, our course offerings span over 12 departments. We also hold monthly lunch colloquia that are open to everyone in the UM community. The colloquia feature research or creative projects that UM faculty and students are working on. Claire Oueslati-Porter

Dr. Oueslati-Porter comes to us from Florida International University, where she was Visiting Instructor in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies. Dr. Oueslati-Porter’s research focuses on gender and sexuality, and she holds a Doctorate in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida. She has extensive field research experience in Tunisia, and her dissertation examined gender, labor, and socio-economic power in a Tunisian Export Processing Zone. She is also researching the experiences of Tunisian women with work and family- related stress and the metabolic syndrome, and conducting ethnographic research on food culture during the holy month of Ramadan. Since receiving her Doctorate in 2011, she has published multiple articles, and has a forthcoming piece in Critical Sociology. Her work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Institute for Maghrib Studies.
