- Undergraduate students join urban research projects
in Mumbai and Johannesburg.
This summer, Daniel Bell and Zachary Woodward will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Mumbai, India. They will join the NSF-funded research project of professors Richard Grant and Jan Nijman that investigates the role of slums in the urban economy. Bell and Woodward, both Photography double-majors, are funded with REU support, a special NSF program that finances a Research Experience for Undergraduates. Their assignment is to develop a portfolio of photographs of the Dharavi and Klipspruit slums in the two cities. Some of their work will be online later this year. - A new summer course is offered on-site in South Africa.

- UM professors receive collaborative research grant on Mumbai and Johannesburg: Professor Richard Grant and Jan Nijman have received a multi-year grant from the National Science Foundation for research on labor and economic activities in the slums of Mumbai, India, and Johannesburg, South Africa. Their's will be a comparative study of the impact of economic globalization on slum dwellers and the effects of slum removals on the urban economy. The NSF grant was made possible with a seed grant from the Urban Studies Program.
