This course will explore contemporary issues relating to American law, public policy and ethics.  Students will discuss the First amendment rights of speech and the press, balancing Church and State on campus, privacy rights under the Constitution, rights to due process, affirmative action, and equal protection.  Each topic reviewed will base the discussion on a key Supreme Court case and analyze its application to the ethical issues.  The course will evaluate the application of ethics, law, character, value, and morality to situations and decisions in your lives. The seminar will incorporate the concepts of ethical judgment, civic character, value inquiry, and the role of law in moral decision-making.  Requirements will include class participation, short persuasive papers, and a final class presentation and paper.

Karen Peterson Throckmorton (J.D., University of Miami School of Law, 1981) completed her Masters in Law in Estate Planning in 1987. She began as Deputy Director of the Center for Ethics and Public Service at the University of Miami School of Law in August of 2001, and has been teaching undergraduate law courses since 2002. Professor Throckmorton directs the Miami STREET LAW project which welcomes undergraduate interns.  Under her guidance, law students research, draft and teach weekly legal and ethical case studies at local public and private middle schools and high schools.
