Based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood “What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play! Come to the Cabaret!” So sings the androgynous MC in the multiple Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret, a ground-breaking Broadway show that seamlessly blends together elements of music, comedy, sex and drama. Set against the dark backdrop of pre-World-War-II Berlin, the action takes place in the seedy Kit Kat Klub where pimps, prostitutes and brash showgirls would rather drink, party and dance than face up to the growing menace around them. The show’s score, by John Kander and Fred Ebb (who also wrote the score for Chicago), was lauded by the N.Y. Times as one of the few Broadway scores “with the kind of lingering power that comes from pungent musicality tied to memorable emotions.” Cabaret is a compellingtour de force of great American musical theatre and a stunning way to kick off our new season!

THE WINTER’S TALE
November 12 - 22, 2008

By William Shakespeare

Jealousy, rage, intrigue, love, revenge and comic mishaps abound in one of Shakespeare’s most intriguingly plotted plays. The king of Sicily suspects his best friend of having an illicit love affair with his wife, the queen. In a fit of jealous revenge, the king orders his wife to prison and sends his infant daughter into exile in Bohemia. Covering a span of 16 years and culminating with one of the most stunning and surprising endings in all of Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale — with its unique blend of tragedy, farce, fairy tale, and romance — is the Bard’s timeless affirmation of the power of forgiveness, love and redemption.

DOG SEES GOD:
Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead

February 19 - 28, 2009

By Bert V. Royal

What happens to the comic strip gang after they mature from innocent kids into angst-obsessed teens? The surprise hit of the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead give us the surprising answer: That Blockhead and the rest of the gang have become sex obsessed, drug-addled teen slackers. This wickedly funny satire moved to Off-Broadway in 2005. “Inventive and raunchy…hysterically funny,” wrote the N.Y. Post. “….this taut comedy manages to make tired clichés about stoners and popular homecoming airheads funny and endearing,” wrote N.Y. Magazine. WARNING: CONTAINS ADULT LANGUAGE AND SITUATIONS.

HELLO, DOLLY!
April 22 - May 2, 2009

Music and Lyrics by Jerry Herman; Book by Michael Stewart

“Hello, Dolly, well hello, Dolly, it’s so nice to have you back where you belong.” And where could Dolly belong better than on the stage where composer, lyricist and UM alum Jerry Herman (A.B., ’53) got his start? Hello, Dolly! is an ebullient and irresistible story of the joy of living, glittering with happy songs, shining with loving scenes, brimming with joyous dancing, and alive with the personality of one of the most fabulous and memorable characters of the American musical theatre stage: Dolly Gallagher Levi. Featuring such beloved songs as Hello, Dolly!, Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Ribbons Down My Back, Before the Parade Passes By, Elegance, It Only Takes A Moment, and So Long, Dearie., Jerry Herman’s Tony Award-winning musical will be a thrilling conclusion to our 2008 - 2009 Season.
