Degree Programs

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Miami offers intensive degree programs to prepare individuals for the numerous careers one can pursue in theatre. Individuals may audition/interview to enter these programs, which provide the students with convervatory-style training which focus tightly on the studies of theatre arts. At the end of the students' college studies, they are granted a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in their chosen specialization.

In addition, we feel that the theatre provides skills which can prepare students for countless numbers of careers. Thus, we offer a well-rounded, liberal arts degree in which students can explore the hundreds of courses the University of Miami offers. This degree also allows students the opportunity to double-major with another program in the university. Also, a minor in theatre is available for students who feel that theatre studies can benefit their studies toward another career. Students wishing for the liberal studies degree are granted a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts upon the completion of their college studies.

B.A. in Theatre Arts

Students in the Bachelor of Arts Program:

  • Receive a well-rounded education in all areas of the theatre.
  • Are taught by full-time professional instructors.
  • Have the option of choosing a second major for related study.

Students in the Bachelor of Arts degree program must meet all the requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, and then choose theatre as their major. Students choosing the BA degree must first take five core courses. These core courses include classes in acting, stagecraft - scenery, costumes, lighting, and prop construction, and theatre history. Following the completion of these courses, the student is allowed to explore other elements of the theatre from a number of different courses. The BA degree is developed to give the student a well-rounded background in all areas of theatre.

B.F.A. in Actng

Students in the BFA Acting Program:

  • Enjoy the luxury of a low student/teacher ration: an average of 10 students to each faculty member.
  • Are not competing against graduate students for stage roles or classes. The Department does not have an MFA graduate program and thus focuses all of its energies on its undergaduate students.
  • Take classes in acting, voice/speech, movement, dance and singing every semester from some of the best teachers in the country.

The Acting program is arranged in a highly competitive conservatory format that assures students of intensive classes in acting, voice/speech, movement, singing, and dance. The Department’s goal is to prepare performers for the professional world and acquaint students with as many specialized skills as possible. To achieve this goal, the Department provides a first-rate faculty who continue to work in the professional theatre and also brings in guest artists and directors. Students are exposed to a wide ranging repertoire of plays both in the classroom and during our production season.

B.F.A. in Musical Theatre

Students in this program:

The Musical Theatre program offered by the Department is a highly competitive conservatory based program. Unique in its approach, the Musical Theatre program is complementary to the Performance program. The student is trained to be a singing actor who possesses a solid vocal and acting technique for work, not only on the musical stage, but also in non-musical theatre as well. Rounding out the curriculum is the sequence in dance and movement that embraces all forms of movement and dance techniques necessary for a successful career in theatre. Students are exposed to a wide ranging repertoire of plays both in the classroom and during our production season.

B.F.A. in Theatre Management

Students in this program:

  • Receive mentor-style training working with experienced management and producing professionals.
  • Gain practical “hands on” experience at our on-campus theatre – the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre – in such areas as house managing, box office sales, marketing and all related business operations.
  • Intern for a summer at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre as well as at a regional professional theatre or commercial theatre office.
  • Master various business software applications including desktop publishing, box office ticketing, spreadsheet, database management and word processing.

The department offers six courses in theatre management and producing that will give the graduate of the program the skills and experience necessary to succeed in this exciting and rewarding area of theatre. There is intensive study of Broadway and Regional Theatre along with specialized instruction in fundraising, grant writing, marketing, organizational structure and personnel and facility management. There are other theatre courses that the major is required to take in order to ensure success in this field: stagecraft, directing, script analysis, and theatre history.

The department also works closely with our majors to pick appropriate electives from the School of Business and School of Communication to enrich and enhance the studies undertaken in the theatre department.

B.F.A. in Stage Management

Students in this program:

  • Receive mentor-style training from experienced AEA Stage Managers.
  • Low student to teacher ratio.
  • Gain practical “hands on” experience stage managing productions at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre as well as in the smaller studio theatre.
  • Participate in observations of professional stage managers working behind the scenes of Broadway, off--Broadway and Touring productions in addition to dance and opera companies.
  • Summer internship at a professional regional theatre.

The Stage Management program is a pre-professional program designed to prepare students for entry-level position in the theatre or to continue their education at the graduate level.

B.F.A. students have the opportunity to stage manage or assistant stage manage a production each semester. Since the University of Miami is strictly an undergraduate program, students do not compete with graduate students for stage management assignments. Our students study directly with professors, not graduate assistants.

The goal of the B.F.A. Stage Management Program is to provide students the classroom training and practical experience necessary to be successful in this profession. The curriculum includes classes not only in stage management – but also in design, directing and theatre management. In addition, there is room in course schedule to select electives that will help each individual students develop his or her own unique talents and interests.

Recent graduates are currently working in Stage Management on Broadway, Off-Broadway and in major regional theatres across the country.

B.F.A. in Design/Production

Students in this program:

  • Are taught by working professionals. Receive intensive and complete instructions in Design & Technical Production.
  • Are given opportunities free of graduate student competition.

The Design/Production program includes a comprehensive study of theatrical design and production–followed by four semesters of intensive studio classes in the student's area of specialization (Scenic, Lighting, Costume, Sound Design, and Technical Production Management). The program is unique in that there are many opportunities for the student to gain practical experience in the design or technical production of our mainstage season, as well as many studio productions. Outside professional work is also encouraged.

The Theatre Minor

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Miami offers students the opportunity to minor in theatre studies. This program allows all university students to pursue their chosen major and fulfull their desires to learn about the theatre.

The Theatre minor offers an opportunity to build a knowledge and skills base in various aspects of Theatre including performance, costume design, and technical areas such as lighting or set design. Students can choose from a variety of courses such as Stagecraft, Playwriting, Scene Study, Directing, Theatre Management, Stage Management, and Makeup, and a host of others. They can gain practical and hands-on experience through participating in our various departmental main stage and Studio Theatre.

To obtain a minor in the theatre, students must complete fifteen credits of courses within the Theatre Department.
