More than 125 people celebrated English Naturalist Charles Darwin’s 200th Birthday with a garden tour and talk by Dr. Lucia Lohmann, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, at UM’s Gifford Arboretum. The event , sponsored by The Friends of the John C. Gifford Arboretum, the Department of Biology and College of Arts & Sciences featured the lecture “Disentangling one of Darwin’s great mysteries: The story of climbing plants,” as well as a guided tour of the arboretum’s natural trails.

"With its hundreds of species of plants, lovely birds and insects, the Gifford Arboretum was the perfect place to celebrate Darwin’s birthday," said Dr. Carol Horvitz, chair of the Arboretum Committee. "It is also the perfect place to celebrate Darwin’s legacy and nature all year-round."

The festivities culminated with Sebastian the Ibis presenting a birthday cake to a man dressed as Darwin, who blew out a candle that flashed the big 2-0-0.
