About the MA and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology
The Graduate Program in Sociology at the University of Miami is designed to provide students with the theoretical, methodological, and analytical tools required for research and teaching. We offer two graduate degrees, the Master of Arts (M.A.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). At the doctoral level, graduate students are encouraged to choose two concentrations from three substantive areas: (1) Criminology, (2) Medical Sociology, and (3) Race and Ethnic Relations. Although the strengths of the department lie within these major programmatic fields, students may also develop a course of study that meets unique research interests and career objectives. Assistantships and Fellowships are awarded competitively each academic year to cover tuition and living expenses.
