About the MA and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology

The Graduate program in Sociology at the University of Miami is designed to provide students with the theoretical, methodological, and analytical skills required for research and teaching.  We offer two degrees, the M.A. and the Ph.D.  Note that the M.A. is offered as the first step in a student’s graduate career; we do not typically offer a terminal M.A. to students who do not intend to pursue a Ph.D.  We provide specializations in criminology, medical sociology, and race/ethnic relations.  Many of our doctoral graduates find employment in teaching positions at the university or college level.  The research skills gained are often put to use in non-academic settings as well, including research organizations, medical schools, and hospitals.
