Dr. Maria Assunção F. Silva Dias

Maria Assunção F. Silva Dias, of the Departamento de Ciências Atmosféricas , IInstituto Astronômico e Geofísico , Universidade de São Paulo, gave both a formal research seminar, an informal seminar on her career development, and led a mentoring session at RASMAS on April 1-3.

Maria Assunção Faus da Silva Dias is coordinator of the Weather Forecast and Climate Studies Center from National Institute for Space Research (CPTEC/INPE). Dr. Dias has said one of the first challenges in her mathematics and meteorologist's career she had to face was her participation in the construction of the Atmospheric Science Department of São Paulo University (USP). The first ten years of the infra-structure education's construction, demanded a lot of sacrifice. Nowadays this department is consolidated and offers under graduation and graduation courses of high level. She is a USP honorary professor and coordinator of the Weather Forecast and Climate Studies Center (CPTEC), from National Institute for Space Research. In the institution she commands a team of 400 people, responsible for developments of innovator products, as the weather forecast until 15 days ahead as well as the implementation of a system for agricultural counseling through the internet in order to help agricultures on the daily activities. Her academic post also represents an important contribution for the understanding of the Amazon role in the regional and global climate control. She was chosen a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. In 2007, she was chosen as vice-president of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science.
