SEEDS and Women in Academic Medicine (WIAM) of the Miller School of Medicine hosted a successful event “CV Review and Academic Enhancement” at the home of Dr. Anne Burdick, Professor of Dermatology and Associate Dean for TeleHealth and Clinical Outreach, on November 4, 2009. Forty women faculty (including ten senior Professors) from many departments, clinical and basic science, came together for an evening of networking and mentoring. Senior faculty spent time one-on-one with junior faculty reviewing their CV’s and providing advice for career success. This interdisciplinary exchange of ideas was welcomed by all, and was a great opportunity for women to discuss their academic strengths and learn from senior women who have successfully navigated the academic ladder. The WIAM group and SEEDS will continue to host events aimed at fostering a supportive network for women faculty, and will continue to develop future professional development activities. To join the Women in Academic Medicine listserve please email Gilma Sznurkowski and ask to be added so you are notified about future events.
Summary of Session Expectations:
• Gather more information about P&T process
• Get to meet other women faculty; networking
• Receive feedback about weak points on my own CV
• Receive an objective and critical evaluation of my CV as it is viewed for P&T
• Receive POSITIVE feedback about my CV and its strengths/ validation that I am on track
• Meet women role models
• See women in leadership roles at different levels
• Discuss the P&T process and be able to ask questions about how to best prepare
• Get general guidance about my academic career
• Get moral support
Were Expectations Fulfilled?
• One-on-one time was tremendous
• Getting multiple viewpoints from others during networking time was helpful
• Longer meeting time was helpful
• Very helpful to hear from someone with experience on or previously on the APT committee
• Helped me align my job responsibilities with my career and personal goals
• Received feedback about strategies on HOW to improve my areas of weakness
• Received interim feedback specific for my promotion goals
• Had a chance to do a bit of relationship building
• SR FACULTY: felt longer time with each mentee was useful to learn context and better interpret CV.
• ONE NEGATIVE: would be better/also useful to allow mentees to gain perspective from MORE than one senior person.
• In comparison to a speed mentoring program: discussed that both kinds of events will serve different kinds of needs and complement each other.
Was Multitasking/Networking time helpful?
• YES THEMES/ADVICE shared by Sr. Faculty and Jr. Faculty based on CV review and Networking:
• Learn how to say “no;”
• Be strategic in what you do, or what you say “yes” to
• Focus/Discipline your enthusiasm
• The UMMSM CV format supports it as a research tool: does not necessarily allow you to highlight other important components of your work; you MUST catalogue your work in other appropriate ways if necessary (e.g. educator portfolio)
• Avoid acronyms on the CV
• If limiting to the standard format, highlight your strengths by prioritizing the content
• Use your personal statement prepared for promotion to highlight your contributions and your vision
• Aim to gain protected time if you are clinical, so you can produce scholarly outputs
• Learn the rules and learn how to be strategic, what are “promo table activities,” impact factors
• Realized how we need to learn how to be strategic and how to negotiate
• Publish your abstracts, COMPLETE your work
• Importance of prioritizing
• Redefine personal timelines; if you don’t want to say “no” learn how to say “when”
• Create a timeline toward promotion if that is a goal – then reverse the timeline, and assess when and what steps will get you there
FUTURE GOALS/WHAT TO IMPROVE UPON?
• Encourage pairs of jr/sr faculty to continue to meet
• Follow up with pairs from this event and evaluate if relationship continues
• Follow up with additional programming!
