Doctoral Student Awards 2011-12



The College of Arts & Sciences is pleased to be able to offer two programs to PhD students in the College (Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship, and Dean’s Academic Year Dissertation Award).  Each is designed to offer additional and critical support to students in their research and dissertation work.  Awards will be made on a competitive basis, with a faculty review committee making the recipient selections.  Students may apply for both awards, but can be selected for no more than one.


Dean's Summer MFA Fellowship


This fellowship provides funding for master of fine arts students to pursue creative thesis projects during the Summer 2012. Funds may be used as salary support or to cover direct costs for scholarly and creative activities. Expenditures must be incurred during the period May 15 to August 15, 2012. The number of awards will depend on available funding, but a minimum of two awards is anticipated.

Award: $5,000

CAS Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship


This fellowship provides funding for doctoral students to pursue research projects during the Summer 2012. Priority will be given to students who have passed their preliminary examinations.  Funds may be used as salary support or to cover direct costs for research activities.  Expenditures must be incurred during the period May 15 to August 15, 2012.   Previous awardees are not eligible.  The number of awards will depend on available funding, but a minimum of nine awards is anticipated.

Award: $5,000

CAS Dean’s Academic Year Dissertation Award


The Office of the Dean will award each recipient a fellowship stipend for the 2012-­- 2013 academic year. This fellowship relieves the student from any work obligation during the award period in order to focus on research and/or writing his/her dissertation. Students receiving this fellowship award are expected to complete and defend their dissertation no later than May 2013. Previous awardees are not eligible. The number of awards will depend on available funding, but a minimum of six awards is anticipated.

Award: Academic year stipend at current departmental level
