Graduate Students

Noel Alphonse joins us from the University of Texas at El Paso, where he received a BA in political science and philosophy and a Master of Public Administration.  His philosophical interests include meta-ethics, epistemology and philosophy of science.

Kristin Borgwald comes to the department from Webster University in St. Louis where she received her B.A. in philosophy and social science. She also completed a certificate in practical and interdisciplinary ethics and a certificate in leadership studies. Her philosophical interests include ethics, applied ethics (specifically bioethics), and feminist theory.


Jane Casillo received her B.A. in Philosophy in 2006 from our own University of Miami. Her philosophical interests include philosophy of mind, philosophy of literature as well as philosophical theories of language.


Dan Cohen has joined the department as the recipient of a prestigious University of Miami Fellowship. He received his B.A. from the College of Wooster in 2006, and he is especially interested in pursuing questions in ethics, philosophy of psychology and philosophy of mind.

Daniel Corrigan earned his M.A. in Philosophy from Georgia State University in 2006. His primary interests are in political and legal philosophy, particularly the philosophy of human rights.

Micah Dugas received his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2007. His primary interests are in political and legal philosophy, particularly the philosophy of human rights.


Rami El Ali, who is originally from Lebanon and in 2006 earned his M.A. in Philosophy from the American University of Beirut, comes to us from York University in Canada. He has many interests in philosophy, particularly in philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and metaphysics.

Jennifer Etheridge received her M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Houston in 2009. Her main interest is in ethics, with particular emphasis on applied ethics. She is the recipient of a highly competitive University of Miami Fellowship.

Daniel Hampikian comes to us from Georgia State University, where he completed his B.A. (Summa Cum Laude) in Philosophy in 2006. He wrote an Honors Thesis on Confucius and Aristotle, and his current interests have moved to the contemporary scene, particularly to philosophy of science and philosophy of mind.

 

Fredrik Haraldsen arrives from Norway where he had been pursuing a dual career as a philosophy graduate student and a professional cross-country skiing coach. He received his masters degree from the University of Oslo in spring 2005, with a thesis concerned with questions arising at the intersection between theories of meaning and epistemology. His primary interests are the philosophy of language and philosophy of logic.

Nurbay Irmak arrives from Turkey, where he earned in 2009 his M.A. in Philosophy at Bogazici University. His main philosophical interest lies in metaphysics, in particular the metaphysical status of fictional characters.

Sabrina Jamil received her M.A. in Philosophy from Florida State University in 2006. She is particularly interested in philosophy of science, and intrigued by the metaphysics of colors.

Kristjan Laasik joins us from the University of Tartu, Estonia, where he received his B.A. and M.A. in philosophy.  His philosophical interests include the philosophy of mind and phenomenology.

Sarah Lesson received her B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Arizona in 2009. Among her many interests in philosophy, there is a special place for philosophy of mind and epistemology.

Mirlene Leyva received her B.A. in Philosophy in 2007 from our own University of Miami. She is passionate and curious about all areas of philosophy, from philosophy of language to aesthetics.

Wilson Man Wai Ho comes to us from the University of Hong Kong, where he completed his B.A. in Philosophy in 2008. He has many philosophical interests, but metaphysics has a special place in his heart.

Brian Mondy joins the department from Bethel College in St. Paul, MN, where he received his B.A. in philsosphy.  He is interested in a variety of philosophical areas including epistemology, and ethical theory.

 

Robin Neiman received her M.A. in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia in 2006. Her philosophical interests include causation, rationality, and practical reasoning. She has recently presented a paper on conceptual relativity at the Miami Forum.

 

Philipp Schwind arrives from Germany. In 2007, he received his M.A. from the University of St. Andrews in the UK. He has special interests in ethics and metaethics, and has recently presented a paper on moral particularism at the Miami Forum.

Zachary Swanson comes to us from the University of Houston, where in 2010 he earned his M.A. in Philosophy. His main philosophical interests are in philosophy of mind and cognitive science.

Heleana Theixos received her M.A. in Philosophy from University College Dublin in 2009. Her main philosophical interests are in ethics, particularly virtue ethics and applied ethics.

Rina Tzinman, who is originally from Israel, comes to us from the Technical University of Berlin, where she received her M.A. in Philosophy in 2010. She is particularly interested in the philosophy of mind.

Mark Warren comes to us from Amarillo, Texas.  He received his B.A. in philosophy at Texas Tech University, where both Dr. Thomasson and Dr. Lewis were teaching at the time. After graduating, he spent several years teaching English in Japan and traveling around Asia. His current interests include the philosophy of mind and metaethics.
 

Jacob Wilkins received his B.A. in Philosophy and in History from Missouri Baptist College in 2008. Every area in philosophy interests him, but he is particularly intrigued by logic and its philosophy.


Aaron Wilson received his B.A. (magna cum laude) in philosophy from Boston University. His central interests are in the philosophies of American Pragmatists Charles S. Peirce and John Dewey. He is also interested in various questions concerning the relation between mind and world, from the epistemological to the metaphysical. He dabs a little into ethics as well.

Nick Wiltsher arrives from the UK, where in 2006 he concluded his M.A. in Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. His main philosophical interest is on aesthetics, and in particular on the way in which theories of imagination can inform how we appreciate a painting, a piece of literature or a play. He is also interested in Sartre’s theory of imagination.

Benjamin Yelle earned in 2009 his M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He is particularly interested in exploring the interface between ethics and metaphysics.
