Observation paper post-write

Objectives: students reflect on the process of observing and attend to the way they've presented their inquiry in writing

Time: typically 20-30 minutes of writing, then 15 minutes of sharing/discussion

Alternative: have students answer these questions first on their own work, then they trade papers with a classmate and answer questions 4-8 on the peer's paper. students can then compare sections marked, main ideas, etc.

Directions to students:

 

1)     Describe the experience of performing an academic observation. How did your approach/methodology compare to the way you ordinarily look at your surroundings? Did observing feel like a scholarly practice? Why or why not?

2)     What was it like to write a paper based on your observations? Did/how did your writing process differ from that of composing other essays in your academic past?

3)     How effective were your field notes? If you did, or were to repeat the observation, how did/would your note-taking process change?

4)     What do you consider the strength of this essay? Why?

5)     What aspect of the essay are you least satisfied with at this point?

6)     What is the main point of your essay?

7)     Underline the 3 sentences that best represent your detailed observation.

8)     Place an asterisk * in the margins next to your 3 main attempts to make meaning from your observations.

9)     What kind of feedback would be most helpful to you in revising? What questions do you have about this essay?
