Teaching Writing -- Overview

In this section we offer suggestions and support for working on writing while teaching inquiry. We've included:

Teaching Common Writing Issues, including:

•     Incorporating Secondary Sources (group work with sample student paragraphs)

Teaching Self-Reflection, including:

•     Doing Authorial Notes in Class (illustrated with a PowerPoint of notes from an introductory assignment)

•     Post-write Activity using reflection questions (illustrated with an observation assignment)

Teaching Peer Critique

•     Example 1: Guided Review and Response of a trends analysis assignment

•    Example 2: Guided Review and Response of an interview assignment

•    Example 3: Guided Review and Response of an observation assignment

Comments & Evaluation, including:

•     Student-generated Rubric for a Survey Assignment

•     Brief Bibliography of Scholarship on Commenting and Evaluation

Using Portfolio Evaluation, including:

•     Considering Portfolios a discussion of how and why teachers use portfolio evaluation

•     Putting together a Portfolio that includes self-reflection (with directions for students and links to student writing examples)
