Teaching Reading -- Overview

Composing Inquiry includes readings that can be used to model how researchers pose questions, investigate issues and present their findings in written form. 

This section provides resources for three different kinds of reading instruction. Though we use specific readings as examples, these strategies and activities can be adapted to any of the readings or assignments.

Reading to Comprehend:  helping students read more purposefully and develop strategies for reading difficult material more confidently

•     Strategy 1: using the SQRMR method (illustrated with the White reading)

•     Strategy 2: Advanced Organizer (illustrated with the Shackel reading)

•     Strategy 3: structuring a reading response (illustrated with the NEA reading)

Reading as a Researcher: using the readings to teach and re-enforce the methods of research

•     Class Activity 1:  following the steps of a research project (using Koza to illustrate)

•     Class Activity 2:  applying the analytical lens of the reading to new material to test conclusions and extend results (using Lutz and Collins to illustrate)

•     Class Activity 3: reading methods, claims and evidence (illustrated with Len-Ríos et. al)

Reading as a Writer: understanding how writers present their work on the page

•     Example 1:  understanding the assignment (illustrated with Frisch assignment)

•     Example 2:  understanding the writer's moves -- structure (illustrated with Lowe)

•     Example 3: understanding the appropriation of sources (illustrated with Edwards and Winkler)

•     Example 4:  imitating specific writing features  -- class lesson on sentence structure (using Prown's interrupted sentences)
•     Example 5: teacher's journal description (discussing Lowe's introduction of quoted material)
