Former DOE official Ines Triay delivers Dr. Jimmie R. Nelson '59 Lecture
Former Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management Ines Triay, B.S. ‘80, Ph.D. ‘86, will deliver the annual Jimmie R. Nelson '59 Lecture in Chemistry on February 9 at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilder Auditorium, Room 112 of the Knight Physics Building, 1320 Campo Sano Avenue in Coral Gables.
A distinguished alumna of the University of Miami’s Department of Chemistry, Triay has dedicated her career to the safe, timely and cost-effective cleanup of radioactive waste from our nation’s Cold War nuclear weapons production and research.
President Obama appointed Dr. Triay in 2009 as the 7th Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management. In that capacity, she led the largest, most diverse and complex environmental cleanup in the world.
Dr. Triay has published more than 200 articles, reports, papers and presentations for professional conferences and publications. Her honors include the Presidential Rank Award, the Wendell Weart Waste Management Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Dixy Lee Ray Award for Environmental Protection, the National Atomic Museum’s National Award of Nuclear Science, and numerous awards from the Department and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
