Student Awards

Applications are available in the Department Office, 212 Merrick Building. All applications, recommendations, and ancillary materials must be submitted on or before Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:00 PM.  Click on the links below to view a description of each award.  All award recipients will be announced on this website by Wednesday, April 15, 2009, and they will be contacted individually by e-mail about their award.  Because of the high volume of applications, unfortunately we will be unable to contact students who did not receive an award.

The D. H. Redfearn Estate Spanish Scholarship

The Redfearn is a cash award for $1000.00 The recipient of the Redfearn must be of demonstrable Hispanic heritage. It is presented to an outstanding senior who has at least a minor in any Modern language.  Click here to download application

José A. Balseiro Hispanic Literature Student Scholarship

The Balseiro, a cash award for $400.00, is presented to a junior or senior in a 300-level (or higher) Spanish or Portuguese course. The student is required to submit an analytical essay which will then serve as the basis for selection for this award. Click here to download application.

The John and Melanie Rohrer German Student Scholarship

This cash award is presented each year to the graduating senior with the highest average in a German major or minor. The amount of the award is $750.00 and is awarded in the Fall and Spring semesters. The Rohrer, named in memory of the parents of our former Chair, Dr. Melanie Rosborough, is one of the oldest such awards established at the University of Miami.

The Machler German Language Scholarship

This cash award for $200.00 is presented each year to a graduating senior who has distinguished him/herself in a course of study in the German language. The Machler is also one of the oldest such awards established at the University of Miami.

The L. J. Tremaine Spanish 214 Scholarship

The Tremaine Scholarship is a cash award presented at the end of each semester to the outstanding student in the SPA 214 class or classes. The determination of that student is made each semester by the professor or professors who have actually taught the course.

The Ann Colbert Memorial Award

The Colbert is a book award that is presented each year to the outstanding senior who is majoring in French at the University of Miami. Established by the friends of Professor Ann Colbert, the award is a memorial for a departmental member whose standards of excellence were an inspiration to her students and colleagues. The award is presented to the student at the annual Honor’s Day Convocation, and the recipient’s name appears on a plaque in the Merrick Building and in the Spring Semester’s graduation program.

Outstanding Senior Award

The Outstanding Senior Award  is a book award presented to the outstanding graduating senior with a major in one or more Modern languages. The recipient’s name is announced at the Honor’s Day Convocation.

David John Ruggiero Scholarship

This cash award for $500.00 is presented each year to a senior who has distinguished him/herself in a course of study in Italian. This award is named in memory of David John Ruggiero, brother to Dr. Guido Ruggiero (History) and brother-in-law to Dr. Laura Giannetti (Modern Languages & Literatures-Italian). If the recipient is a graduating senior his/her name is listed in the spring graduation program of the University every year.
