Fiorella Cotrina received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Southern California in 2009. She has taught Spanish and Ibero-American studies courses in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Southern California. Her primary areas of specialization are 19th and 20th century Spanish American literature and contemporary Latin American cinema. In her research and teaching, Cotrina is interested in interdisciplinary studies of Latin American literature, cinema, and culture focused on identity, aesthetics, modernity, technology, consumer and popular culture and the auditory. Using her dissertation as a point of departure, her current project is an examination of how cinema spectatorship affected the definition of modern identity through key works of Latin American literature. In addition to writing and teaching about film, Cotrina is also a filmmaker and has made several short films. She has a forthcoming article on the anthology Lessons from the Deep School: New Perspectives on Race and the Obama Era.
