Pedagogical Training

All students receive careful training in language teaching methodologies from faculty experts who supervise their development as instructors in our language programs. For students wishing to specialize further in language and pedagogy, the Department offers coursework in sociocultural theory, second language development, bilingualism, languages in contact, and heritage language instruction—a combination of which can lead to the Graduate Certificate in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching.

Students nearing the completion of their dissertation projects have a variety of additional teaching opportunities available to them, including mentored and co-teaching with faculty advisors, teaching third languages of expertise, and designing their own courses in collaboration with UM’s Bachelor of General Studies Program.

All student instructors have access to advanced multimedia resources and state-of-the-art computing services and software to facilitate their teaching endeavors.
