Salvador Luis Raggio has published in Perú, El Arca: Bestiario y ficciones (Animales de antología por autores hispanoamericanos) Lima: La Buena Vida Ediciones. El Arca is a compilation of short stories by such famous Latin American authors as Alejandro Zambra, Mayra Santos Febres, Edmundo Paz Soldán, Alberto Chimal, Ricardo Sumalavia, Claudia Ulloa Donoso and Mónica Belevan. Salvador Luis Raggio has published in Perú, El Arca.


Edwin Murillo's essay “El soliloquio sobre el cadáver: vitalidad filosófica en Trilce LXXV y España, aparta de mi este cáliz IX,” will appear in Divergencias Volume 6, Number 1 Summer 2008.

 

Conferences and Colloquia

Irene Koyada hosted the Alliance Francaise event, " ACROSS TIME: CROSSING BORDERS, CROSSING GENRES" on April 9, 2008 where all participants enjoyed French poetry by creating and presenting their work

Benoît Mauchamp delivered a paper, titled "Contemporary Images of Cambodia: Aesthetics and Ideology," at the American Comparative Literature Association conference in Long Beach, CA, in April 2008.

Edwin Murillo presented his paper, “Orfeu Carioca: Music and the burden of authenticity of two film versions of Orfeu da Conceição,” at Florida International University's SEXTA CONFERENCIA BIANUAL DE ESTUDIOS CULTURALES ESPAÑOLES Y LATINOAMERICANOS held February 29 - March 1, 2008.

Melva Persico will be presenting a paper entitled: "Tradition versus Modernity: The Double-voiced Discourse of Ekomo" at the 61st annnual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference from April 17-19,2008 at the University of Kentucky.

Irene Koyada will be giving a presentation on Thursday, February 21st, titled "Each man kills the thing he loves:  The Dream Work of Love and Death in Fassbinder’s film adaptation of Querelle by Jean Genet," at the University of Louisville, Kentucky  for their annual conference called "The Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture since 1900". 

Art Tang's paper titled, "The Literary Odyssey of Conrad Detrez: A Rehabilitation of Brasilidade in Francophone Aesthetics", has been accepted into the 61st Annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference for the Luso-Afro-Brazilian section taking place on April 17-19 2008.

Art Tang will give a paper, titled "The French Gaze and Brasilidade: Perpetuations and Subversions of the Metonymical Reduction of Rio de Janeiro in French Film and Literature" at the Building Bridges in the City and Beyond:Languages, Communities, and Cultures Conference, on April 11 & 12, 2008, at the University of Maryland--Baltimore County.

Benoît Mauchamp will deliver a paper, titled "Contemporary Images of Cambodia: Aesthetics and Ideology," at the American Comparative Literature Association conference in Long Beach, CA, in April 2008.

In February 2008,  Edwin Murillo will be presenting, “El soliloquio sobre el cadáver: Trilce LXXV y España aparta de mí este cáliz IX,” at the National Association of Hispanic and Latino Studies in Baton Rouge, LA, and “Orfeu Carioca: Myth, music and the burden of authenticity in two film versions of Orfeu da Conceição,” at the Sixth Biennial Florida International University Conference: Writing and Filming the City (Miami, Florida, March 6-8, 2008). 

Gabriela Zaviezio and Vanessa Reynaud were the organizers of the UM Graduate Student Conference, "Translation and Transitions" for February 15 – 16, 2008. The Keynote Speaker is Dr. Alfred MacAdam from Columbia University. This event is co-hosted by the Departments of English and Modern Languages and Literatures.

Art Tang is presenting a paper at the conference on The Passions of Jean Genet at the University of Miami, November 15 – 16, 2007. The paper is entitled: “Jean Genet et les Palestiniens: La Subversion de la politique orientaliste”. Along with Dr Ralph Heyndels, he will be co-hosting an interview with visiting scholar Didier Eribon, who is also presenting at the conference.

Edwin Murillo has been selected for a Center for Latin American Studies summer 2008 grant to conduct research abroad.  He also took 2nd place in the 2008 Citizens Board Research and Creativity Forum essay competition in the Humanities category.  The essay is titled “El soliloquio sobre el cadáver: vitalidad filosófica en Trilce LXXV y España, aparta de mi este cáliz IX”.

Art Tang has been selected for a College of Arts and Sciences summer 2008 Graduate Research Fellowship and he was the recipient of the 2007 Summer Grant offered by the Center for Latin American Studies. This grant helped to fund a month of research in the Arquivo do Estado de Sao Paulo in SP, Brazil this past summer.
