Dissertation Defenses

Thouraya Ferid defended her dissertation, “‘Terrorists’ Imaginaries: Social Exclusion, Queerness, Repressive Apparatus and the Emergence of Post-religious ‘Terrorism’ in Contemporary Maghrebian Francophone Literature and Film,” (with distinction) on March 23, 2018.

Amine Zidouh defended his dissertation, “Phantom Arabic, Dislocated French. Auto-anthropological Imaginaries in the Works of Jean Genet, Abdellah Taia, Leila Sebbar and Nabil Ayouch,” (with distinction) on March 21, 2018.

 

Fellowships, Awards, and Grants

Elena Bonmatí was awarded a College of Arts and Sciences Summer 2018 Research Award.

Elena Bonmatí was awarded a 2018 Sigma Delta Pi Graduate Research Grant.

Fély Catan was accepted to participate in the Decolonizing Knowledge and Power summer school at the Center of Study and Investigation for Decolonial Dialogues in Barcelona.

Sam Johnson was awarded the Brazil Initiation Scholarship to conduct field research in Brazil during summer 2018 by the Brazilian Studies Association.

Lilianne Lugo was awarded a College of Arts and Sciences Summer 2018 Research Award.

Lilianne Lugo was accepted to participate in an NEH Summer Institute on Digital Technologies in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Georgia.

Lilianne Lugo will be a UGrow Fellow in Digital Humanities during AY 18-19.

Jordan Rogers received an honorable mention from the Ford Foundation’s 2018 Predoctoral Fellowship Program.

Nick Sheets won a FLAS Fellowship to study Haitian Kreyòl at FIU and in Haiti during Summer 2018.

Amine Zidouh was awarded a College of Arts and Sciences Dissertation Fellowship for AY 18-19 (declined).
