Master of Arts Degree Admission Requirements:

  • Completed Application form (download pdf ‌or apply online)
  • Official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree conferred from an accredited college or university is required for admission to the program. Official transcripts must be submitted from all higher education institutes attended by applicant.
  • A 1-2 page written personal statement
  • A 2-3 page admission essay
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A nonrefundable $85 application fee (made payable to the University of Miami)
  • Upon receipt of these materials, a personal interview will be arranged with the director of the program.

To apply, complete the  MALS application form and send it along with your personal statement, essay, and the $85 nonrefundable application fee directly to the MALS Program.

Official transcripts (for all post-secondary education) and three letters of recommendation from former professors or other persons qualified to evaluate your educational performance are also required. If you are currently taking classes or are a recent graduate (within 2 years) you must submit at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member.

Personal Statement – The personal statement should be approximately 1-2 typed pages in length, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, and explain why you are interested in pursuing a MALS degree, what academic and professional qualities you posses that could help you excel in this Program, what goals you hope to achieve, and any other qualities you feel make you an ideal candidate overall.

Essay – Choose a book, play or movie and write a 2 page essay on why the piece is interesting. Essays must be written in the third person, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, and proofed for errors.

International Applicants:

In addition to the above requirements, international students must also submit the following:

  • • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (undergraduate and graduate level work). Transcripts must be sent from the registrar of each institution. The University of Miami reserves the right to contact the issuing institution or government agency to verify the authenticity of documents.

  • • English translations: All transcripts and diplomas in a language other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations. Certified English translations supplement, but do not replace original documents. Please remember to send both. Please contact the Ofice of Interdisplinary & Professional Studies for assistance with non-English transcripts at 305-284-8783 or  

  • • Copies of all diplomas and/or certificates earned.

  • • Bank Statement: An official bank or government sponsorship letter (issued within 6 months of starting at UM) addressed to the University of Miami, guaranteeing the availability of sufficient funds to cover tuition and fees, books, housing, insurance, and personal expenses is required ($50,000 USD). Please note – computer printouts are not acceptable. If the bank account belongs to a relative or other sponsor, a letter of sponsorship addressed to the University of Miami is also required, and must contain the following – amount of financial support promised for the first year of enrollment, date written, name and address of the sponsor, relationship of the sponsor to the student, sponsor’s signature.

  • Official TOEFL Score (if applicable), or completion of Intensive English Program.
