Young Leader Recognized
A University of Miami undergraduataduate is named a Goldman Sachs Global Leader.
Strength. Vision. Integrity. If asked to describe a great leader, most people would list these or related traits. But biology major Rujuta Pandya ’07 doesn’t think such qualities are inevitable in any given leader. Instead, she believes, each one has his or her own style of leadership.
“One great leader could be an outspoken dictator and another could be quiet and passive,” she said. “Two obvious examples are Napoleon Bonaparte and Mahatma Gandhi.”
Pandya has given this subject – in theory and practice – a great deal of thought, and she was recognized for it last year as one of the 150 students worldwide who were named Goldman Sachs Global Leaders. Created in 2001 by one of the premier investment banking firms, the program provides opportunities for students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential. The prestigious Global Leaders program awards students with a stipend and invites them to the Global Leadership Institute in New York City, where they attend lectures by prominent political, social, and business leaders.
Pandya was particularly impressed with a talk given by Jeanette Kagame, the first lady of Rwanda. “She spoke to us about her experiences with the aftermath of the civil war. She helped us focus on what we’re striving to achieve as leaders,” said Pandya.
A premedical student, she hopes one day to work in women’s global health. “I think I was selected as a Global Leader,” Pandya said, “because I am passionate and willing to take charge and help people.”
