Galilee Semester Information Session The George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies is hosting an information session with Dr. Haim Shaked on the new Galilee Semester program. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm 105 Merrick The George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies is hosting an information session with Dr. Haim Shaked (Program Director) Ira Sheskin (Program Advisor) on the new Galilee Semester program, for prospective applicants from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3 at the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Studies, 105 Merrick. The Galilee Semester is a unique opportunity for students to receive UM credits while spending the semester in Israel. Students will take a total of about 5 courses for 15 credits during the Spring 2009 semester, space in this new program is very limited. Courses are led by UM Faculty as well as Israeli scholars. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided at the information meeting. Dr. Ruth Behar "An Island Called Home: Returning to Jewish Cuba" lecture Lecture and exhibit "The Jews of Cuba" with photographs by prize-winning Cuban photographer Humberto Mayol and text by Prof. Ruth Behar 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Wesley Center, 1210 Stanford Dr. Dr. Ruth Behar is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and The Henry King Stanford Chair in the Humanities Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of Arts and Sciences for the 2008 spring semester. She has been a Member of the American Philosophical Society since 2001. Dr. Michael Berenbaum "The Significance of Auschwitz in the Holocaust". Opening remarks by Mr. Eli Zborowski, Chairman of the American Society for Yad Vashem. 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm Wesley Center, 1210 Stanford Drive Opening of The Auschwitz Album Exhibition with a lecture by Dr. Michael Berenbaum, who will speak on "The Significance of Auschwitz in the Holocaust". Opening remarks by Mr. Eli Zborowski, Chairman of the American Society for Yad Vashem. The Auschwitz Album is a unique collection of photos taken by German SS officers. The photos represent one day in the systematic murder of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. The Auschwitz Album Exhibition was created by Yad Vashem and was originally displayed at the U.N. headquarters in New York in January 2005, commemorating 60 years of the liberation of Auschwitz.
