“The African Union Convention on Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa.” 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM LC 140 The Department of International Studies and the Africana Studies Program Present: “The African Union Convention on Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa.” Presenter: Pierre-Michel Fontaine, PhD Visiting Associate Professor, Dept. of International Studies and Latin American and Africana Studies Programs Moderator: Edmund Abaka, PhD Associate Professor, Dept of History, and Director, Africana Studies Program There are more internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the world than refugees. The phenomenon of internal displacement, especially in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia, has therefore become of great concern to the international community. However, whereas there is a fairly well developed international regime for refugees, who are persons forcibly displaced across national boundaries, the international regime for the protection of the human rights of IDPs (who are, by definition, displaced within their own country) is still in gestation. The A.U. Convention, the first of its kind in the world, goes a long way towards strengthening such a regime in Africa. |
