Kate Ramsey works on colonial and postcolonial Caribbean histories with a particular focus on Haiti. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University, her M.A. from New York University, and her B.A. from Yale University. Her research and teaching interests include the politics of law, religion, and performance in the Caribbean; the genealogy of the concept of “magic” under colonialism; Caribbean intellectual history and cultural movements; histories of health and healing; and the relationship between anthropology and history. She is currently completing a book entitled The Spirits and the Law in Haiti, which examines the history and legacies of penal and ecclesiastical laws against popular religious practices in Haiti, from the late colonial period to the present day. Prior to joining the History Department at UM, Ramsey was the recipient of postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Humanities Forum and Yale University’s Center for Religion and American Life. She has also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.
