Karl Gunther is a historian of early modern Europe who specializes in British history and the interaction between religion and politics in the English Reformation. He received his B.A. in History and Philosophy from Wheaton College in 2001 and his Ph.D. in History from Northwestern University in 2007, where he was the recipient of numerous research fellowships and the Department of History’s Teacher-Mentor Award. Gunther’s research focuses on the history of religious radicalism; religious violence, persecution, and toleration; English Puritanism; and political thought and early modern intellectual history more broadly. His work in these areas has been published or is forthcoming in Past & Present, The Journal of Ecclesiastical History, and History Compass. Before joining the faculty at the University of Miami in 2008, Gunther taught at Northwestern University and Rice University. He offers a wide range of courses on the religious, political, cultural, and intellectual history of late medieval and early modern Europe.
