Background

Dr. Kathryn McCollister is an Assistant Professor and Health Economist in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. McCollister received her doctorate in Economics from Florida International University in 1999. Dr. McCollister has worked with academic collaborators of many disciplines, state officials, and clinical specialists in evaluating treatment interventions for individuals with substance use disorder. She has conducted economic evaluations of addiction treatment programs for unique populations including criminal offenders and pregnant/parenting women.

Dr. McCollister has developed a secondary area of research focusing on the burden of disease and disparities in health-related quality of life (HRQL) among occupational groups and the visually impaired. She has worked with national databases (e.g., NHIS, MEPS, NLSY) to estimate and compare quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) among various racial and ethnic subpopulations, among those with visual impairment and other chronic conditions, and by occupation and industry.

Dr. McCollister's studies have been published in various multidisciplinary journals including the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Law and Policy, Journal of International Trade and Economic Development, Economics & Politics, Evaluation and Program Planning, Addiction, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, American Journal of Public Health, Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Industrial Medicine, Diabetes Care, and Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.

She has served as the Principal Investigator on projects funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (R01, DA031785, K01 DA13962), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (041070) and the California Department of Corrections. She has also served as the Project Director and Senior Investigator on projects funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
