Background
Professor Chitwood received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Kentucky in 1980. He is a Professor of Medical Sociology in the Department of Sociology with secondary appointments in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. His substantive areas of research include Alcohol & Drug Use and Misuse, HIV/AIDS, Epidemiology, and Health Services Research. His research has been published in AIDS Care, American Behavioral Scientist, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Behavioral Health and Research, Journal of Drug Issues, Population Research and Policy, and Social Science and Medicine among others. Dr. Chitwood currently serves as Principal Investigator on two projects: Intervention Among Heroin Sniffers to Prevent Injection Drug Use, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Prevalence of HIV, Hepatitis B and C and Associated Risk Factors among Hispanic IDUs, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He also serves as Developmental Core Leader of the University of Miami Drug Abuse and AIDS Research Center (DAARC).
