Background
Amie L. Nielsen is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Miami . She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Delaware in 1997. Beginning in the fall of 2004, she will be an investigator on two grants, including "Women's Prison TC: Outcomes, Process, and Economic Analysis" (Public Health Service, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Grant No. R01 DA14370) and "Costs and Benefits of Alcohol Services and Interventions" (Public Health Service, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Grant No. R01 AA13167).
Dr. Nielsen's research interests include race/ethnicity, deviance, and crime. Her research focuses on issues related to racial/ethnic differences in heavy alcohol use and drunkenness, racial/ethnic differences in criminal behavior, and the roles of racial/ethnic and immigrant composition, socioeconomic factors, and alcohol availability for violent crime at the neighborhood level. Dr. Nielsen's research has also included issues related to drug treatment for criminal offenders. Her recent publications have appeared in Justice Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, Journal of Studies on Alcohol, Deviant Behavior, and elsewhere.
