English Minor with a Literature Concentration
The student minoring in English completes, with a grade of C- or better in each course and with an overall GPA in the minor of 2.0, at least 15 credits at the 200-level or above beyond the credits earned for freshman composition.
The 15 credits must be distributed as follows:
- One literature course at the 200-level;
- A second literature course, at either the 200-level or the 300-level;
- A third literature course, at the 400-level;
- Two additional English courses other than freshman composition (i.e., any two courses designated ENG and numbered 200 or above, excluding ENG 208).
English Minor with Creative Writing Concentration
Students may declare the minor in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing through their College. Submitting materials to the Creative Writing Program is not required for the minor. The student completes, with a grade of C- or better in each course and with an overall GPA in the minor of 2.0, at least 15 credits at the 200-level or above beyond the credits earned for freshman composition.
The 15 credits must be distributed as follows:
- Introduction to Creative Writing ENG209;
- One literature course at the 200 level, excluding ENG210
- Beginning Cross-Genre workshop non-majors ENG219;
- Intermediate Cross-Genre for non-majors ENG391.
- One literature course at the 300 or above level.
ENG209 Introduction to Creative Writing
3 credits Fall & Spring Semester & First & Second Summer Session
Analysis and writing of short stories, poems and a third genre. Cannot be taken for credit only.
PREREQUISITE: ENG 105 OR EQUIVALENT. CANNOT BE TAKEN FOR CREDIT ONLY.
ENG219 Beginning Cross-Genre Workshop
3 credits Fall & Spring Semester
Frequent exercises in workshop environment, with readings in contemporary fiction, poetry and a third genre (for example nonfiction, screenplay, or playwriting).
Attention to tense and points of view; reviews of grammar and punctuation. 30-40 pages of creative writing, including development and revision of either one full-length short story (12-20 pages), a series of poems (3-5) or an essay (12-20 pages).
PREREQUISITE: ENG 106 OR EQUIVALENT and ENG209
ENG391 Intermediate Cross-Genre Workshop
3 credits Fall & Spring Semester
Review of craft issues presented in 219, with emphasis on development of structure and contemporary use of point of view and integrating formal strategies in their creative work.
