Alyssa Eily

Recipient of the 2008 University of Miami prize in poetry.

What was your undergraduate creative writing experience at UM like?

My experience was very positive overall. I had great professors, especially Walter Lew, that really gave me direction and still allowed me to have creative latitude.

What are you doing post-graduation?

I'm currently applying to grad schools, mostly up North. I'm getting my Masters and then my PhD in Clinical Psychology, but I would eventually like to get an MFA in creative writing.

Having won the UM Undergraduate Poetry Prize, are you going to attempt entering your poetry in other prizes, or submitting it for publication?

I am going to start entering my poetry in more competitions as well as submitting it for publication. I hope to put out a book sometime in the not-so-distant future.

Anything else you'd like to say about UM's Creative Writing program?

I'm glad I was involved in a program that explores so many different aspects of poetry, especially since I delve so much into the surreal and mathematical. Stay close to your classmates, you'll be spending quite a lot of time together over the course of four years and their input will transform your writing in ways you could never anticipate.
