Our Vibrant Miami Community

The MFA program at the University of Miami is located in historic Coral Gables, Florida, a pedestrian-friendly town of forty thousand boasting a free trolley, Mediterranean architecture, and over 140 restaurants. Downtown Miami is a ten minute Metro ride away.  The Everglades are just to our west; the beaches lie less than ten miles to the east.  Some of our favorite places include the Venetian Pool (www.venetianpool.com) and the Fairchild Tropical Gardens (www.Fairchildgarden.com) And of course there’s our terrific independent bookstore, Books and Books (www.booksandbooks.com) where we meet to hear great writers read and, afterwards, enjoy a great meal in the open-air courtyard.

We've also got film festivals galore: the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, the Miami Jewish Film Festival, and the Miami International Film Festival to name just a few. And then there’s Art Basel Miami Beach, an international art show (and sister event of Art Basel in Switzerland) which combines an international art show with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events including music, film, architecture and design. Exhibition sites are located in the city's beautiful Art Deco District, within walking distance of the beach and most hotels and restaurants.  In addition, we have the Miami Book Fair to look forward to each year. Here on campus, we enjoy the Lowe Art Museum and Gallery as well as performances at the Frost School of Music.
