Eligibility and Application Procedure

Students applying to DILS must be highly motivated, self-disciplined and self-directed. They must be able to demonstrate serious academic or professional reasons why they wish to study the particular language and be fully committed to the program. Students will establish a learning contract with the DILS program before they begin their language study.

Undergraduate students must be in good academic standing and will need the approval of their Academic Advisor.

Recognizing the time commitment required for language study, students should be careful not to undertake DILS in an otherwise heavily loaded semester.

Application and Interview

Students wishing to enroll in DILS should complete an application form during the semester preceding the one in which language study is to begin. Application deadlines are posted on the DILS website. Application forms can be downloaded from the website. Applications must be in the DILS office by the announced deadline. Interested students who missed the application deadline but would like to study a langue should inquire with DILS if the language they want to study is being offered. Late admission into a current program will depend on available space and whether the program is able to accommodate the student's level of proficiency in the language.

Applications will be evaluated according to their qualifications, their stated goals and interests. After the review of their applications, students will be invited for an interview.

The completed application should be submitted as an email attachment to DILS@miami.edu.

The Director of DILS will research the languages of the strongest applications to determine the availability of the appropriate instructional materials, Language Partner and outside examiner. Students' final acceptance will depend on the availability of these components.

Registration

Once students are accepted in a language program they will register by signing a Learning Contract. Registered students are required to attend an initial orientation meeting at the beginning of the semester.
