Hitting the Right Notes

Biology student Karla Rivera-Cáceres studied how songbirds in remote areas of Costa Rica learn new duets when paired with a new mate. Audio included! "It's like the birds think: If you're willing to invest the time and energy to learn a new duet code, then I am sure you are not going to leave me because if you do, you would lose a big investment and would need to learn a whole new duet code with another partner." she said.

UM Junior Selected to Inaugural Student Advisory Board

Stefanie Rodriguez, a political science major, has been selected to the Campus Vote Project’s inaugural Student Advisory Board. “I am extremely proud of our students for making their voice heard in this election,” Rodriguez said. She understands the importance of democracy, being born to two Cuban parents who escaped the dictatorship of Fidel Castro in Cuba.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

"The professors at the College of Arts and Sciences were the best mentors I could have asked for. They gave me the foundation I needed to ask critical questions and work toward answers. The Goldwater Scholarship will likewise open up a future for me, and I am deeply honored to join this tradition of undergraduate scientists." - Yujia Zhou

Spotlight on the Dean's Student Ambassadors

Liz Bocanegra

Psychology & Sociology
"My favorite A&S memory is going to the Beyond the Book luncheon at the culmination of my research experience with my mentor, family, and sponsors who made the program possible. My favorite UM memory is being a part of the Great Start program the summer before my freshman year – I met wonderful people who later on became my best friends as well as had a sneak peek as to what college would be like. "

Austin Skiera

History & Political Science
"It has been my distinct pleasure to represent the College of Arts and Sciences in 2 separate terms as a Senator in the Student Government Senate. My best college-specific memories have been my classes with Dr. Hermann Beck. His spellbinding lectures engage even the most apathetic students and attract several auditors each semester."

Rebecca Garcia

International Studies
"I am most proud of having led or participated in various social justice initiatives- to help unionize campus food service workers, to have coordinated and helped to orchestrate #BlackLivesMatter protests, and having formed part of the UM College Democrats team that helped nearly 1,000 students and other members of the UM community to register to vote during this past election cycle."
