A Unique Cultural Perspective: A&S Grad Student from Cuba Shares Her Unique Experience

“Everyone told me that it could not be done,” said Dainerys Machado Vento. “I said politics has put us in a strait jacket. I am going to choose freedom.” A love of language, literature and theater brought the first Cuban student in decades on a student visa to UM for her doctoral studies.

Alumni Spotlight: The Beauty of Blogging

UM alumna and award-winning blogger Patrice Grell Yursik, also known as Afrobella, came back to the U to talk with fellow 'Canes as part of USpeak. "I wanted to see more of a reflection of black beauty in a holistic way. I wanted to see and hear from more women like myself; women with natural hair, women of different sizes, a variety of skin tones and textures that were interested in beauty from the inside out. I created the magazine that I couldn’t find," she said.

A&S Political Science Student & Community Activist Makes a Difference

UM student, award-winning community activist Monica Bustinza shares her experience of leading Get Out the Vote. “If you knock on the right doors opportunity is here,” said Bustinza, a political science major and president of Get Out the Vote, the University’s non-partisan student organization.

"I love understanding how the brain works - from development to our senses, there is always more to learn. Before I started research I thought that I wanted to go to Med School. Then I realized how much fun it was to ask questions that no one knows the answer to and design and experiment to answer those questions. "

"I've spent the last 3 years basically living in the art department. I think my greatest accomplishment has been my work, and even more so, the amazing connections and friends I've made with everyone around the studio. I've learned so much from all the grads and professors, this experience has been invaluable!"

Maggie Dickey

Psychology, ‘17
"My favorite memory at University of Miami has been from my participation in Camp Kesem this past summer. Camp Kesem is a week long camp for children with parents who have been affected by cancer. It is a camp where these kids get to take their mind off what may be going on at home, and just get to be kids!"
