The University of Miami seeks an inspiring leader as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to guide and promote an environment of academic excellence and opportunity in a diverse, dynamic, and leading academic institution. This is an exceptional position for an experienced, visionary leader who will enhance the College’s commitment to intellectual growth and civic responsibility within the enduring values of the liberal arts.

Founded in 1925, the University of Miami is a private, not-for-profit research university and is primarily located on a beautiful campus in Coral Gables, part of the vibrant intellectual and cultural community of the Miami area. Over 13,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff provide a comprehensive and robust educational experience to over 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. The University's 12 colleges and schools, along with the Division of Continuing and International Education, offer 114 bachelor’s programs, 104 master’s programs, 53 research/scholarship doctoral programs and four professional practice doctoral programs. In Fall 2008, the College of Arts and Sciences had an enrollment of over 4,000 undergraduate and almost 550 graduate students enrolled in 21 departments and 9 interdisciplinary programs. The College has around 450 full-time faculty tenured in the departments of Aerospace, Anthropology, Art and Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Classics, Computer Science, English, Geography and Regional Studies, Geological Sciences, History, International Studies, Mathematics, Modern Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Theater Arts.

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost. The next Dean of CAS will provide visionary leadership to the academic and administrative functions of the University; ensure the recruitment and development of excellent faculty, staff and students; encourage a collaborative environment for teaching, research and service; mobilize and allocate resources; and serve as a successful partner with colleges, agencies, peer institutions, and external constituencies.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced administrator with strong management skills and a record of success in academic administration; an exceptional scholar-teacher with a record of achievement that will qualify the candidate for appointment at the rank of professor and with the ability to encourage and develop scholarly research and creative activity; a leader who believes in and encourages shared governance and who will work effectively and collegially across campus; an educator who recognizes the important role of interdisciplinary inquiry, and new information technologies; and an individual deeply committed to preparing students to lead ethically responsible lives in a diverse, rapidly changing global environment.
