2008 Undergraduate Awards

The Center for Latin American Studies is pleased to announce the third annual University-wide competition for prizes in Latin American Studies. The competition is open to any enrolled undergraduate student.

Three prizes will be awarded:
$250 for first place,

$100 for second place

$50 for the best entry from a first-year student.
Entries may be papers or creative projects, including original musical compositions, art, and films. They will be judged on the basis on scholarship, originality, and overall quality. The maximum length for papers submitted to the competition is 40 pages including endnotes, appendices, and illustrations. Creative projects may be submitted on cassette or other media but must be accompanied by a written description of the project. It does not matter whether the entries were done as class assignments or not.

Projects may be on any area related to Latin American, Hispanic, or Latino/a life and culture. Entries may be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Judging will be done by a representative panel of UM faculty appointed on a rotating basis. Winners will be announced and prizes presented at the UM Honors Day Convocation prior to graduation.


The deadline for entries is 4:00pm Monday March 17, 2008.


Four copies of entries should be prepared, with no name attached, accompanied by a separate sheet of paper with the entrant's name, address, telephone number, and the project title.
