Program Coordinator
The Center for Latin American Studies is glad to welcome Sandy Acosta Cox as its new Program Coordinator. Sandy comes to us after recently graduating with an MA in International Affairs from American University in Washington, DC. There she specialized in International Politics and Human Rights, and focused her academic research on the growing opposition movement in Cuba and its place amongst current social movements literature. Prior to completing her degree, Sandy worked for several human rights organizations. Most recently, she was a Program Officer at Freedom House in Washington, DC focusing on democracy promotion programs in Cuba. She also worked with several groups on voting issues regarding Puerto Rico, as well as with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, now Human Rights First. Furthermore, she served at the US House of Representatives during the 107th Congress at the House International Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights under the direction of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Sandy, a Miami native, received her B.A. in International Relations and a Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from Florida International University in 1998 and is delighted to be returning home to work at CLAS.
