Interdisciplinary Research Groups
Rules for Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) funding applications are as follows:
- Proposed topics should be as multidisciplinary as possible. The more interdisciplinary, the more appropriate for the CLAS selection committee.
- Applications for IRGs may be submitted by any U.M. faculty member but must have the signature of at least one other faculty member from another department, school, or program. One of them should clearly appear as the coordinator of the group’s functioning and activities. The application—not to exceed three double-spaced pages, should include a description of the proposed theme and a tentative schedule of group activities. There is no standardized application form. Once the list of accepted groups is made available, it will be circularized, and others at that point may apply to join if they wish.
- Once approved, individual groups may submit applications for up to $1,000 in discretionary funding. Funds are to foster and facilitate IRG gatherings, such as low-budget lunches, modest honoraria for outside speakers, essential group work materials (e.g. photocopies), and the like.
- Individual IRGs may decide to plan a public session open to the university community on the topic of their work. However, this is not a requirement for funding.
- The CLAS will receive credit in the publication of any scholarly work resulting from a funded IRG. A copy of the published work will be submitted to the Center.
