Professor Stein’s research area is Modern Latin American History, focusing on the Andean countries and Argentina. He is presently involved in various research projects on the history of wine in Argentina including a comprehensive history of the Argentine wine industry. He has recently completed a co-edited work with Prof. Ana María Mateu of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina entitled El vino y sus revoluciones: Una antología histórica sobre el desarrollo de la industria vitivinícola argentina. His previous work has been in the social and cultural history of Peru, concentrating on the evolution of the Lima popular sectors throughout the 20th century. Dr. Stein’s principal publications on the early years include Populism in Peru: The Emergence of the Masses and the Politics of Social Control (1980) and his two volume Lima obrera: 1900-1930 (1985 and 1987). He has also written on Peru during the 1980s, Peru en crisis (1988), analyzing the impacts of the decade’s profound social and economic crisis on social, political and cultural changes in the country. In addition to his work at the Center for Latin American Studies and the History Department, Dr. Stein teaches wine seminars in the Miami area.

The Center for Latin American Studies is happy to welcome Tiffany Madera, its new Assistant Director. Tiffany comes to us with a great love for Latin American Studies. She recently graduated with her Masters Degree in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from Florida International University with a Concentration in Cuba, examining Arabic Dance and Culture on the island. Tiffany researched extensively working closely with artists of many genres in Cuba and co-created two films documenting Arabic Dance while founding the country's first Arabic Dance troupe. Tiffany's undergraduate work culminated with a Bachelors Degree in Comparative Literature and French from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst while spending three years of study in France and has travelled extensively in Latin America. Professionally, Tiffany comes with a strong background in non profit management, theater, dance and performance. She is a published arts writer and acclaimed interdisciplinary performance artist.
