Dr. Ariel C. Armony, Director of the University of Miami’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is also Professor of International Studies at UM’s College of Arts and Sciences and Weeks Professor in Latin American Studies.  His areas of specialization include civil society, democratization, social innovation, human rights, military cooperation, and the role of China in Latin America.  Dr. Armony began his academic career at the Universidad de Buenos Aires where he received his licenciatura in philosophy and literature.  He subsequently received his doctorate in political science from the University of Pittsburgh.  While in Argentina he worked both as a print and television/radio journalist, writer and producer.  His publications include Argentina, the United States, and the Anti-Communist Crusade in Central America, 1977-1984 (1997); Repression, Resistance, and Democratic Transition in Central America (2001); The Dubious Link: Civic Engagement and Democratization (2004); and The New Left in Latin America (2009), co-edited with Dr. Cynthia Arnson.  Dr. Armony has received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Kellogg Foundation, and the Fulbright Program for teaching and research in China.
