CLAS welcomes Brazilian visiting scholars

May 9, 2012

CLAS is delighted to announce the arrival to the University of Miami of Carlos Gadea and Rafael da Silva Oliveira, two visiting scholars from Brazil, whose research stay in Miami is funded through prestigious awards from the Brazilian Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES). The scholars' visit will enable them to further their research agendas, foster intellectual partnerships with UM faculty, and participate in CLAS initiatives, programs, and activities.

Carlos Gadea is a professor at the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos – Unisinos, Brazil; editor of the Ciências Sociais Unisinos journal, and a researcher at the Brazilian Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico. Rafael da Silva Oliveira is a Ph.D. student in Human Geography at the University of São Paulo and a professor in the Department of Geography of the Federal University of Roraima in Brazil. His research is focused on international migration and gold mining, and the relationship between territoriality and sexuality, particularly in relation to sex work in the Amazon and the Caribbean.

The Center is proud to host these scholars as it furthers its mission of connecting the University of Miami to Latin American institutions. We welcome Rafael da Silva Oliveira and Carlos Gadea to the Center and look forward to a productive and intellectually stimulating relationship.
