CLAS Field Research Award Recipient Publishes Scholarly Article

April 20, 2011

The Center for Latin American Studies extends its congratulations to Paola Prado for having her article, "Lighting up the Dark: Telecenter Adoption in a Caribbean Agricultural Community," published in the latest issue of the Journal of Community Informatics. Paola's research for this article was funded by a field research grant awarded by CLAS as part of its program to support graduate students' research.

The idea for Prado's article was developed as a result of coursework conducted under UM professor, Dr. Steven Stein. Focusing on the community of El Limón de Ocoa in the Dominican Republic, the article examines the integration of the community following the arrival of information and communication technology (ICT) in 1997.

The field research for the peer-reviewed article took place in 2008 and was further expanded through the use of resources at the Office of the First Lady of the Dominican Republic, Roger Williams University, and UM's Knight Center for International Media.
