CLAS: Center for Latin American Studies

Faculty Development Travel Grants: Call for Applications

Domestic and International Submission Deadline (non-LASA): October 3rd, 2011

LASA Only Deadline: November 15th, 2011

The University of Miami (UM) Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is pleased to announce the availability of faculty development travel awards for the 2011/12 academic year.  These awards, funded by a Department of Education Title VI grant that has designated the Miami Consortium, a collaboration between UM and Florida International University, a National Resource Center for the study of Latin America and the Caribbean, are specifically designed to support projects that promote scholarly knowledge and stimulate public awareness of all aspects of the region.

Application Deadlines & Awards

CLAS will hold two calls for faculty development travel awards this fall.  The first call (submission deadline: October 3rd) will consider applications for domestic and international travel, but will exclude requests for travel to the annual Latin American Studies Association (LASA) conference to be held in May of 2012.  The second call for applications (submission deadline: November 15th) will consider only LASA travel requests.  The maximum grant amount for domestic travel is $400 and $600 for international travel.

Eligibility

Awards will be given to UM full-time faculty once the merit of an application is established and it is determined that the request is consistent with the principles of our Title VI grant.  Requests may include domestic and international travel for such areas as professional linkages, community and institutional linkages, curriculum and course development, and educational outreach.  Travel grants can cover faculty travel to conferences in which they are presenting, but may not directly fund research.  A faculty member can only receive one travel grant per academic year.  Furthermore, CLAS faculty development travel awards cannot fully fund any single travel request, so applicants must list other sources of funding in their grant application (department funding, other grants or awards, etc.).

Application Requirements and Submission

All applicants must complete the online application found here.  You may address any questions to Jordan Adams at jadams@as.miami.edu

Please note that all international travel must comply with the Fly America Act (49 U.S.C. 40118) and be pre-approved by the U.S. Department of Education before departure.  In order to meet this requirement, foreign travel award recipients must submit their complete flight itineraries to CLAS 30 days prior to travel in order to receive approval confirmation from the Department of Education.  Awards not fulfilling this requirement will not be reimbursed.

Evaluation Criteria

All faculty development travel awards will be awarded based on Department of Education T-VI criteria and stated objectives.  Strong applications will clearly demonstrate how the indicated travel will: promote collaboration with other National Resource Centers, strengthen linkages between UM and community organizations or international institutions, promote international agreements, create instructional resources about Latin America and the Caribbean, promote the teaching of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL), and provide outreach for UM initiatives and programs.

Reporting Requirements

All travel award grantees are required to submit a 1-2 page final report that details their trip and how it supported Miami Consortium and Title VI goals to Jordan Adams at jadams@as.miami.edu.  In your report, please make specific reference to measurable outcomes and direct benefits to the Miami Consortium, CLAS, and UM, as well as information about professional contacts established.  You must also include any materials that were presented during or produced for your travel.  These materials are necessary for Department of Education reporting requirements and may be featured on the CLAS website.

Funding Disbursement

All travel award recipients will be reimbursed following their travel via a UM eBERF.  The eBERF must be initiated by the traveler or their Department within 30 days of return and will not be approved by CLAS until the Center receives a final report and necessary supporting materials.
