CLAS: Center for Latin American Studies

Barrett Conference Grants for Graduate Students

Deadline: November 30th, 2011

The University of Miami (UM) Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is pleased to announce the availability of travel awards for the 2011-12 academic year.  These awards, funded by the Barrett Endowment, are specifically designed to support conference travel for graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Consistent with its mission, CLAS created this program to contribute to the training of graduate students with a substantial research interest in Latin America and the Caribbean. Active participation in professional conferences is a key component of graduate education. In combination with other funding sources, these funds will make it easier for students to present their work at conferences in the United States and abroad.

Eligibility

Awards will be given to UM full-time graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences once the merit of an application is established and it is determined that the request is consistent with the guidelines of our program.

Requests may include domestic or international travel.  Travel grants can only cover student travel to conferences in which they are presenting, but may not directly fund research.  A student can only receive one travel grant per academic year.  Furthermore, Barrett travel awards cannot fully fund any single travel request, so applicants must list other sources of funding in their grant application (department funding, other grants or awards, personal funds, etc.).

The maximum grant amount for domestic travel is $400 and $600 for international travel.

Application Submission

All applicants must complete the online application found here.  You may address any questions to Israel Alonso, CLAS Associate Director, at i.alonsochavez@miami.edu.

Evaluation Criteria

All student travel awards will be awarded based on criteria established by the Center for Latin American Studies.  Strong applications will clearly demonstrate how the indicated travel will: promote student professional advancement, promote collaboration with other colleagues, strengthen linkages with other institutions, advance a high-quality and relevant research agenda, and promote the activities and linkages of UM’s Center for Latin American Studies.

Reporting Requirements

All travel award grantees are required to submit a 1-2 page final report that details their trip and how it supported the goals outlined in the previous section.  Reports should be sent to Israel Alonso at i.alonsochavez@miami.edu.  You must also include any papers/materials that were presented during or produced for your travel.  These materials or a portion of them may be featured on the CLAS website.

Funding Disbursement

All travel award recipients will be reimbursed according to UM travel policies. Original receipts will be required. Please contact Joselyn Garcia (j.garcia27@miami.edu) for reimbursement details.
