Applying
The candidate must hold a B.S./B.A. degree from an accredited institution. Consideration is give to applicants who have successfully completed general chemistry (two semesters), organic chemistry (two semesters), physical chemistry (two semesters), and the related laboratories. A course in advanced inorganic chemistry is strongly recommended, and remedial work in this area may be required of students who have not taken such a course. The mathematics and physics courses that are normally included in a B.S. program in chemistry are also required.
The complete application
Applicants should read the instructions carefully before filling out the forms and should keep copies of all material submitted during the application process. The application and all supporting documentation become the confidential property of the School and cannot be returned. Evaluation of the application will be done only after the file is complete with the following:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Deadline
The course program at the University of Miami is such that entry into the graduate program is best done in the fall semester, which begins in late August of each year. The deadline for submission of all application materials (including transcripts, GRE score, letters of recommendation, and TOEFL scores for foreign applicants) is January 15 of each year. Receipt of application materials before the deadline is recommended. Applications completed after February 1 may be held for consideration for the same year depending on the availability or for the following year at the applicant's request.
All materials should be sent directly to the Department of Chemistry. Materials submitted in support of an application cannot be released for other purposes nor returned to the applicant.

Financial Assistance
Beginning full-time students may be awarded teaching assistantships that carry a twelve-month stipend of $23,000 in 2007-08, provided you maintain satisfactory academic progress. This opportunity allows students to gain experience while teaching in undergraduate laboratory courses. It requires approximately 16 hours of work per week during the academic year. Students who have completed the first academic year may be awarded a research assistantship. In general, all graduate students in good standing will receive either Teaching or Research Assistantships during their entire tenure in our program of study. However, in order to qualify for a teaching assistantship students need to pass a verbal English Proficiency Exam (SPEAK exam). Maytag and University of Miami fellowships are available to outstanding applicants and are similarly valued. All graduate fellowships are accompanied by a full tuition scholarship. Application for financial aid is made on the application form for admission.
Speak Exam
Upon arrival to the University of Miami we will require that you pass an English Proficiency Exam entitled a SPEAK exam in order to qualify for Teaching Assistantship responsibilities. In the absence of passing the test your stipend would be $21, 000/year. More details about the SPEAK exam can be found at: http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,29045-1;39236-2,00.html.
Tuition and Fees
In 2007-2008, the tuition per credit hour is $1,208.00. Some fees depend upon full-time status or number of credits taken. This is determined by the sum total of semester credits carried by the student in all divisions. Graduate Students are classified full-time if they carry nine (9) or more credits in a regular semester.
Note-If you wish to apply, we strongly recommend that you fill out a pdf application linked above and mail it to the Dept of Chemistry address shown below for preliminary departmental consideration. Do not include the $50 fee for initial consideration. After the Dept of Chemistry admissions committee has reviewed your application, you will be notified and given further instructions regarding payment of application fees.
