Kate Ramsey is an associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Miami. She holds a Doctoral degree from Columbia University and was the recipient of postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania's Humanities Forum and Yale University's Center for Religion and American Life.
Ramsey works on Caribbean history and culture with a particular focus on Haiti. Her recently published book “The Spirits and the Law: Vodou and Power in Haiti” (University of Chicago Press, 2011) was awarded the 2011 Bershire Book Prize. In it Ramsey examines the history and legacies of penal and ecclesiastical laws against popular ritual practices in Haiti.
