Students admitted to the Ph.D. program in the Department of Biology are guaranteed 10 semesters of support either as a teaching assistant or a research assistant. Both provide a $22,000 nine-month stipend and an 18-credit tuition waiver. M.S. and B.S./M.S. students must secure their own funding to cover tuition and stipend.

In addition, various grants and fellowships are available to Ph.D. Students. These include:

UNIVERSITY AND MAYTAG FELLOWSHIPS

Applicants to the Department of Biology are eligible for a University Fellowship or a Maytag Fellowship for which the department may nominate top applicants. The UM Fellowship provides funding for two years at $25,000 per year. The Maytag Fellowship provides funding for one year at $20,000, and is renewable for two additional years. The College will provide a tuition waiver for as many as 18 credits per year to accompany a UM or Maytag Fellowship.

LISA D. ANNESS GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

This fellowship supports graduate students in biology who will be co-mentored by a member of the faculty of the University of Miami and a member of the research staff of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The fellowship provides a stipend of $22,000 for one year, and is renewable for two additional years. An 18-credit per year tuition waiver accompanies the fellowship.

JAMES W. MCLAMORE FELLOWSHIP IN TROPICAL BIOLOGY

This fellowship supports graduate students working in the area of tropical biology. The fellowship provides a stipend of $22,000 for one year. An 18-credit per year tuition waiver accompanies the fellowship.

RESEARCH SUPPORT

Once enrolled in the graduate program, students are able to apply for support from a variety of departmental sources. These include:

  1. William H. Evoy Graduate Research Support Fund – awards to graduate students in the early stages of their research.
  2. Jay M. Savage Graduate Research Support Fund – small grants for pilot studies in ecology, behavior, and biosystematics.
  3. J. Gerry Curtis Plant Sciences Scholarships – small grants for research in pure or applied plant sciences.
  4. Kushlan/Frohring Graduate Research Support Fund – awards to doctoral students in the final stages of their doctoral work.
